Outreach/Education

The Asthma Outreach/Education workgroup has recently formed from the previous Awareness/Education and Environment/Workplace Workgroups. The mission of this workgroup is: working to eliminate environmental impacts on asthma, and to optimize individuals’ self-management of asthma through education in schools, homes, and workplaces. Asthma education may include awareness of environmental factors, self-management with adherence to treatment programs, asthma 101 training of school/workplace staff, and increasing knowledge of available community resources.

Our workgroup met via teleconference on Monday January 9, 2012, Thursday March 8, 2012, and most recently on Monday June 4, 2012. Some agenda items we discussed included:

  • Adding disparities information to the current Asthma 101 presentation
  • Asthma education for Hispanics
  • Asthma education for teens
  • Additional venues to present Asthma 101
  • Need for a sub-group to discuss curricula for other audiences such as teens and elementary school students
  • Ideas and priorities for next grant year beginning in September 2012
